International Surfing Day celebration Friday

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will hold its International Surfing Day celebration at Harbinger Winery on Friday.

The all-ages event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the winery at 2358 W. U.S. Highway 101 in Port Angeles.

Tickets are $20 for adults or $10 for students with an ID card. Children 12 and younger will be admitted free.

A ticket is good for one complimentary glass of beer, wine or soft drink provided by Harbinger Winery; a dinner provided by H2O Waterfront Bistro; and one raffle ticket.

Raffle and silent auction prizes include a Lib Tech surfboard, Gnu snowboard, art by Todd D. Fischer and other items.

“We have a fair amount of swag that we give out,” said Arnold Schouten of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.

Joy in Mudville will perform at the annual gathering, which serves as an outreach event and fundraiser for the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.

“We’ve done this for quite a few years now,” Schouten said Tuesday.

“This is an opportunity for us to do a little outreach and maybe get some new members and maybe generate some funds for our activities.”

The Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works to protect and preserve the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.

The Olympic Peninsula Chapter conducts water quality testing, sponsors beach cleanups, provides a barbecue for volunteers at the Hobuck Beach cleanup on Earth Day and maintains portable toilets at the Elwha, Lyre and Twin rivers.

The chapter also supports the Clallam County Marine Resources Committee’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training for oil spill response and works to enhance beach access by cleaning up parking lots and fixing potholes, among other projects.

Membership to the Surfrider Foundation is not limited to surfers. It is open to kayakers, beach users and anyone interested in protecting coastlines.
