‘Inspired by Sea and Science’ on display through Feb. 2

PORT TOWNSEND — “Inspired by Sea and Science: The Fiber Art of Carla Stehr” is on display at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

The exhibit is at the center’s gallery in the Flagship Landing building, 1001 Water St., Port Townsend. Gallery admission is free, although donations are welcomed.

Stehr uses stitching and surface design techniques to create fiber art based on patterns in nature.

Stehr’s fiber art is influenced by her scientific career as a marine biologist. She has studied cells and tissues of marine organisms and photographed the complexity and beauty of aquatic organisms with a scanning electron microscope.

Some of these microscopic images have found their way into Stehr’s art. Other works are inspired by the colors and textures of marine life often not easily seen.

Stehr’s fiber art has been juried into several national and international exhibits throughout her career, including exhibits at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Sequim Museum and Arts and in Uncommon Threads, a six-women group show at the Lynnwood Event Center earlier this year. Stehr will be featured at Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Museum in La Conner in 2025.

“Inspired by Sea and Science: The Fiber Art of Carla Stehr” can be viewed from noon to 3 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 2.
