Indigenous poetry reading set for Monday

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System is hosting the second annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Poetry Reading in celebration of poetry created and performed by Native poets of the Olympic Peninsula.

The in-person reading will be at the House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. or people can join live via Zoom from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday.

An open mic for Native poets will kick off the event, followed by the featured reader for the evening, Sara Marie Ortiz, an Acoma Pueblo writer, performing artist and filmmaker.

Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, the Kenyon Review, New Poets of the American West and others.

She is the author of Red Milk (2013) and lives in Burien.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a national holiday that honors the Indigenous peoples of what is now known as North America. First celebrated in 1992 on the second Monday in October, Indigenous Peoples’ Day was officially proclaimed a national holiday in 2021.
