Husband-wife duo go classical for Coyle concert

COYLE — The Concerts in the Woods series will begin June by moving to “the classical side of the aisle,” said organizer Norman Johnson.

Folias Duo will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center at 923 Hazel Point Road.

Admission will be by donation. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission. The center has seating for about 65 people.

Flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron blend their talents in Folias Duo, Johnson said.

The husband-and-wife duo are on tour from Grand Rapids, Mich., and have been playing together for 15 years.

“Their name comes from a genre of music: La Folía (Spanish), which is one of the oldest European musical forms,” Johnson said.

“This chord progression emerged between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century in vocal repertory found in both Italy and Spain. Their name is pulled from the distant past, but their all-original music is new and fresh.”

The two were inspired by the music of Astor Piazzolla and formed the duo through their work as Argentine tango dance band leaders.

“Note that Coyle is extremely privileged to be their only performance in Washington state on this summer’s tour,” Johnson added.
