This Labor Day weekend brings a whole lot of music and visual art to explore, both online and in clubs and galleries on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Checking the venue website or social media pages, or even calling the place on the phone, is a good idea before you set out for an in-person event.
Here are some highlights for this weekend and beyond.
Tonight’s Sequim Art Walk, in and around downtown Sequim, has a blue color theme and many artists displaying their work in venues such as the Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St. There, featured artists Julie Senf and Ryoko Toyama display their water media works inspired by the Olympic Peninsula. The free, self-guided walk is open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. while information can be found here.
The First Friday Speaker Series presents master weaver Susan Pavel at 7 p.m. tonight for an in-person program at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., in Port Townsend. Space is available for up to 30 attendees, while Pavel’s presentation will be recorded for later viewing on the Jefferson County Historical Society web portal. Live music with jazz vocalist Jean Lenke goes from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in The Castle courtyard, 651 Cleveland St., in Port Townsend, tonight. Next up at the venue: the Cosmiphonics play R & B and funk from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Lenke, organizer of the first-Friday jazz, noted that all fall and winter music at The Castle will be on the garden stage outdoors with lighting and heaters on the way.
The Shift will play folk-rock with a reggae backbone from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at Finnriver Farm & Cidery, 124 Center Road, Chimacum. Saturday night brings Jack Dwyer and George Radebaugh from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday is the evening for Backwoods Hucksters from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For details and tickets, see finnriver.com and use the Farm Events menu.
“Broadway in Your PJs” is the musical revue filmed at Port Angeles’ Lincoln Theater and presented online today through Saturday. Ghostlight Productions presents the show featuring numbers from musicals such as “South Pacific,” “Chicago,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Bright Star.” Tickets are by donation here.
The Soulshakers blues band will take the stage at the New Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, Saturday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
“Trajectories,” an exhibition of abstract paintings by Christina Rosenthal, awaits visitors to Harbor Art, 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles. The public is invited to meet the artist and explore her work during gallery hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and next Wednesday through Saturday. Rosenthal’s show will stay on display through September and October; she’ll also be on hand there during the Port Angeles Art Walk on Sept. 11 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Hidden History tours are free courtesy of the Port Townsend Main Street Program every first and third Saturday of the month. This Saturday’s tour starts at 1 p.m. at the Haller Fountain at Washington and Taylor streets in downtown Port Townsend. During these one-hour tours, Key City Public Theatre’s Bry Kifolo leads a jaunt into the city’s lesser-known historical aspects. For information and reservations, click here.
The Olympic Music Festival continues this next week with free online performances. Festival artistic director Julio Elizalde will give a piano recital of Chopin and Debussy at 5 p.m. Sunday and again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. For details, click here.
