History of candy containers to be presented

Irene Wyman to speak Sunday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Irene Wyman will speak about the history of candy containers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Wyman’s presentation is part of the North Olympic History Center’s History Tales series in the social hall at the First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St. Parking and entry are on Laurel Street.

The History Tales series is free and open to the public.

“Today when we hear the words ‘candy container,’ most of us will think of the heart-shaped boxes of chocolates that appear at Valentine’s Day. Or perhaps that box of Peeps at Easter. But there is a history behind the containers that hold these confections,” said Kathy Estes, executive director of the North Olympic History Center in a press release.

Wyman, a doll and toy collector, will talk about this history, beginning with samples from the late 1800s to present time.

She will share pieces from her collection, most of them from Germany.

After completing a 35-year teaching career that spanned time in North Dakota, Oregon and Port Orchard, Wyman moved to Port Angeles with her husband.

She has written two books, “Clallam County Schools East to West” and “School Marms and Masters and the Bells They Rang.”

For more information, call the center at 360-452-2662 or email artifact@olypen.com.
