Historical talk to focus on Spruce Production Division

PORT ANGELES — Steve Hauff will talk about the Spruce Production Division’s role in Clallam County during World War I at 2 p.m. Sunday.

His free lecture about his new book, which is sponsored by the Clallam County Historical Society/North Olympic History Center, will be in the Social Hall at the First United Methodist Church, 107 E. Seventh St. Entry is off of Laurel Street.

Clallam County played a significant role during World War I. Hauff’s talk will present the cast of characters and events surrounding the Spruce Division and its impact on logging, railroad construction and life at the camps and in Port Angeles.

Copies of Hauff’s book, “The Spruce Production Division in Clallam County,” will be available for $15 per copy. The book chronicles the operations of the Spruce Division in Clallam County. Included are sections covering the construction of a 37-mile “impossible” railroad in just six months, mill construction and private operations which used Spruce Division personnel. The volume includes over 100 photos, comprehensive maps and first-hand narratives to describe the project.
