Harbor Art Gallery showcases two artists

PORT ANGELES — Harbor Art Gallery is highlighting two artists this month: Nathan Shields and David Johannesson.

Shields’ art is displayed in the main gallery and the Artist Room at the gallery at 114 N. Laurel St.

He will be at the gallery during the operating hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 29.

Shields grew up in Southeast Alaska and Northwest Washington.

He studied math and education in Salem, Ore., and Bellingham, taught high school in Vancouver, Wash., and is currently a math and art instructor at Crescent School in Joyce, having moved to Port Angeles in 2012.

While drawing and sketching have been his lifelong pastimes, in the last several years he has developed an interest in relief printmaking in wood and linoleum.

Nathan Shields works in printmaking, as in this piece of art, call “Flicker.”

Johannesson is a new artist at Harbor Art Gallery. He is best known for his designs in wood.

Johannesson grew up in northern Minnesota and was educated in industrial arts and auto body painting and repair.

“He has lived in vastly different environments such as the varied climates of northern Minnesota, the tropics of Florida, the deserts of Nevada, and now the tranquility of the Olympic Peninsula,” organizers said.

As an industrial arts educator, he stressed the relationship of form and function in all areas of design, and that can be seen in his wood creations, organizers said.

He has designed and built children’s kitchen sets, functional folding children’s chairs, rocking horses, bird houses, wooden canoes adorned with carved decorations, bent canoe paddles and many other practical wood pieces.

He has carved many carousel horses that serve as rocking horses or home decorations.

His plans are to create unique pieces of furniture, carvings, home and yard decor, and other functional items.

The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday.
