Grover Gallery to feature work of Northwind Art School teaching artists

Classes conducted at several Port Townsend venues

PORT TOWNSEND — Northwind Art is inspiring people to start planning for Fall art making with a new exhibit featuring the work of seven teaching artists at the Northwind Art School in Building 306 at Fort Worden.

The Northwind Art School Teaching Artists exhibit will be on view from Saturday through Nov. 28 at Grover Gallery, 236 Taylor St., Port Townsend. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

“Artist Darsie Beck will be featured in the window gallery,” said Sandra Petranek, Grover Gallery sales associate.

“Darsie will also be teaching Travel Journal Sketching on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2 in Building 306 at Fort Worden.”

Beck’s classes focus on teaching everyone, from beginner to advanced, so that they learn to experience the ease of working with watercolor pencils, micron pens and water-brushes, according to a press release.

Julie Read is another well-known longtime teaching artist at the school. Her upcoming class, Paint with Acrylics Level 1, takes place Sept. 7.

She also will teach a weekend favorite, Paint and Pizza: Paint a Western Flyer, on Sept. 9, to celebrate the three-day Wooden Boat Festival, which begins that day.

This class is for ambitious beginners and will be held downtown at Jeanette Best Gallery, 701 Water St., where students will paint while being offered pizza, beer, wine and cookies.

Dana Sullivan, the beloved author and illustrator of the Dead Max series and more than 20 picture books and graphic novels, will teach Picture Books & Graphic Novels on Sept. 7 for students aged 15 to adult.

This is a class for illustrators and writers who want to learn how to tell their stories and find out more about how the publishing world works.

Throughout the run of this Grover Gallery exhibit, several of the artists will give live demonstrations on the weekends.

In addition to Beck, Read and Sullivan, artists featured in this exhibit include Nonie Gaines, Tracy Bigelow Grisman, Meg Kaczyk, and Suzanne Lamon.
