Green Thumbs series considers tame, wild greens

PORT ANGELES — Selinda Barkhuis will discuss cultivated and wild greens at noon Thursday at the next Green Thumb Gardening Tips Education Series.

The lectures are free and open to the public; however, donations to help offset costs are accepted and appreciated.

In a change of venue from previous Green Thumb presentations, Barkhuis will speak in the Emergency Operations Center downstairs in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

Barkhuis will share her experiences of growing and harvesting crops for salads, soups and sleepy teas.

An enthusiast of self-sufficient and sustainable food growth practices, she will provide information on setting up an indoor garden to grow salad greens for enjoying throughout winter and transplants for spring gardens.

Barkhuis uses intensive and organic gardening techniques to grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs on her city lot in central Port Angeles, one that was featured in the 2012 Master Gardeners Petals & Pathway Garden Tour.

She has been a regular presenter for the Green Thumb Gardening Tips Education Series on a wide variety of topics ever since.

This presentation is sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Extension Master Gardeners. Presentations are from noon to 1 p.m. the second and fourth Thursday each month except November, December and January, when one presentation is offered, at the county courthouse.

Lectures provide home gardeners with education on topics relevant to planting and maintaining sustainable gardens and landscapes in Clallam County.
