Ghostly tale unfolds in “The Uninvited”

PORT ANGELES — Theaters have long had a reputation for being haunted, hence the common practice of leaving a “ghost light” illuminated on stage at night when the theater is closed. Strange, eldritch events are happening on stage at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse in the revival of “The Uninvited,” which opens tonight.

The curtain will rise at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., for “The Uninvited” at 7:30 tonight and Saturday night, as well as the nights of Tuesday, April 5-6 and April 9-13. It will be on stage at 2 p.m. this Sunday and April 7 and 14.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for students. Tuesdays are $15 reserved or $8 at the door.

Tickets can be purchased at Brocante Antiques in downtown Port Angeles at 105 W. First St., online at www.pacommunityplayers.com or purchased at the door prior to performance.

In the play by Tim Kelley, adapted from the novel by Dorothy Macardle, it is just a year or two after World War II and young playwright Roddy Fitzgerald and his sister Pamela have purchased the 200-year-old estate of Cliff End, a picturesque mansion in the West of England overlooking the Bristol Channel.

At first they cannot believe that they got the beautiful house for such a great price, but then locals start nervously sharing stories about the house, muttering dark rumors that the house is cursed and haunted, the site of death by peculiar, unexplained circumstances, play organizers said.

As the brother and sister settle in they notice more strange events — the disappearance of the housekeeper’s cat, an eerie blue glow that comes out of the nursery and the distant phantom fragrance of orange mimosa in the air.

Mysterious circumstances come to a head during a séance when the truth is revealed.

“The Uninvited” was first presented at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse in 1993 in a production directed by Kathleen Balducci. Twenty-six years later, after appearing in more than 60 productions herself and having directed more than 26 plays, she is stepping down from directing duties with this final revival.

The cast for “The Uninvited” includes Steve Chamberlain, Kathleen Hussey, Cheryl Dawn Koenig, Danielle Lorentzen, Janet Lucas, Anna and Jeremy Pederson, Josh Sutcliff, Heather Wikert and George Wood.
