Annual Garden Gala set for Saturday, Sunday

SEQUIM — More than 50 vendors of garden goods are expected at the Soroptimist International of Sequim’s 21st annual Gala Garden Show this weekend.

The show will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula at 400 W. Fir St.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for children younger than 12.

Clallam County Master Gardeners will present a speaker’s series during the show.

Live music, food and a garden wagon raffle also are planned.

The featured artwork of the show is “Fancy Fenceline,” an 11-inch-by-11-inch watercolor painted by Melissa Penic.

The fence she painted is alongside an alley.

“It impressed me that the gardener would decorate for the public in such a humble place,” Penic said.

On Sunday the show will feature its keynote speaker.

Jessi Bloom, author and award-winning ecological landscape designer, will speak at 1 p.m. on “Creating Permaculture Landscaping.”

She will discuss what permaculture is and how it can be applied to a residential backyard. Even those who don’t want to have a full permaculture property can benefit from incorporating a few aspects into their gardens, she said.

To learn more about permaculture, see her website at www.jessibloom.com, and listen to the podcast, “Living Homegrown — Peraculture 101 with Jessi Bloom.”

Saturday will offer a full day of speakers.

Here is the schedule:

Saturday

• 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. — Expert panel, presented by Keith Dekker, Audreen Williams, Jan Danford and Chris Barton.

The panel is composed of Clallam County Master Gardeners, each with a special interest.

They will answer questions from the audience on any gardening topic and suggest online resources.

• 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. — Vegetable Growing 101, presented by Bob Cain.

Cain will discuss how to successfully grow vegetables in the Pacific Northwest. He will include information about timing, varieties, soils and ways to grow more Northwest-friendly exotic vegetables.

• 12:15 p.m. — Lunch.

• 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. — A Tasty Approach to Landscaping: Berries, presented by Jeanette Stehr-Green.

Stehr-Green, who is known as the “berry lady,” will discuss growing berries on the Olympic Peninsula. Her talk will focus on considerations when using berries in the landscape as an alternative to ornamental plants.

• 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. — The Art and Science of Fertilizers, presented by Muriel Nesbitt.

The questions asked most often garden clinics are about soil and fertilizers, show organizers said.

Nesbitt will talk about fertilizing a garden – what to add, how much, and when.

The show is Soroptimist International of Sequim’s main fundraiser of the year.

More than $19,000 goes out locally in the form: the Live Your Dream Award, high school scholarships, the Medical Loan Closet (loan out new and used equipment), donations to First Teacher, Rose House (shelter for victims of domestic violence), Sequim Community Aid, and the Boys and Girls Club, among many others.

Funds raised at the show will go to projects such as high school scholarships, the Live Your Dream Award, a medical loan closet, the First Teacher program, Sequim Community Aid, Rose House Shelter, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula and the Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation, an organization helping women in Chiapas, Mexico, started by several Sequim women.
