Gallery 9 spotlights paintings, drums

PORT TOWNSEND — Gallery 9 is featuring Katy Morse’s acrylic paintings and Tom Stewart’s handmade drums this month.

Gallery 9 at 1012 Water St., is home of the North Olympic Artist Cooperative. It is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week, being closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Masks are required.

Morse is an artist and healing arts therapist.

“Following in the stardust lineage of Shiloh Sophia, she is an Intentional Creativity Guild member and Color of Woman Teacher,” organizers said.

“As a mystical explorer her acrylic paintings are imbued with images of the divine feminine and sacred masculine, with respect to the spectrum between genders. Each painting tells a story about finding self through archetypes,” organizers said.

Said Morse: “I am weaving threads of healing with art. I have become a healing arts therapist through years of study in the human body and energy systems as a licensed massage therapist and Reiki master.

Her website is at www.KatyMorse.com.

Stewart has been making Joyful Vibration hand drums, Zen Gardens, yoga block props and Yin Yang hanging art at Gallery 9 since the gallery’s inception.

“I see my craft as functional artwork that is good for the soul,” Stewart said.

Stewart resigned as an associate professor in Helena, Mont., after 25 years of teaching applied mathematics, engineering and computer science.

After this “teaching burn-out” he had no idea where life would take him next, he said.

He was drawn to African dance and inspired when a teacher whispered into his ear, “There is something happening here with you and the drum; maybe you should go home and make one for yourself,” Stewart said.

Over 200 drums later, he creates drums with inlayed wood patterns and rich tones.

Stewart sells his drums exclusively through Gallery 9 in Port Townsend. His website is www.Joyfuldrums.com.
