SEQUIM — The First Friday Art Walk will celebrate with a yellow-themed event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at various venues in downtown Sequim.

Special events in August include:
• Three Little Birds Studio d’Arte, 247 E. Washington St., an arts and crafts store and studio, will join the art walk this month.
• Fat Ferdie and the Stolen Sweets will perform at 7 p.m. at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

The band features vocalist Jessie Lee; Ed Donahue, trumpet; Andy Geiger, tenor saxophone; George Radebaugh, keyboards; Ted Enderle, bass; and drummer Tom Svornich.
• The Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., will host a reception for Jean Glaser and Julie Hembree from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Glaser and Hembree will present “Voices of Land and Sea” at the gallery during the month of August.
Hembree uses natural materials, such as shells and sea glass, to create coastal-themed multimedia artwork.
Hembree recently has begun incorporating collage techniques into her work to add new layers of depth and storytelling.
“I like to experiment with different techniques,” Hembree said. “Sometimes the best art for me is the result of a happy mistake.”
Glaser has been working primarily in animal portraits for more than 20 years.
Before moving to the Pacific Northwest, Glaser primarily created animal portraits. Her art is now transforming by the use of collage, texture, markers and pencils to incorporate patterns and colors unrelated to the subject.
“Voices of Land and See” will be on display at Blue Whole Gallery throughout August.
• Sequim Museum & Arts, 544 N. Sequim Ave., will feature “Challenging our Creativity” in the Judith McInnes Tozzer Art Gallery.
The art quilt and fiber arts exhibit will feature the work of the Peninsula Art Quilters, a sub-group of the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club.
Quilts on exhibit will include “Inspired by Birds,” “Trees on the Discovery Trail” and “Circles.”
• The A. Milligan Art Studio and Gallery, 520 N. Sequim Ave., will present “Chiaroscuro.”
Chiaroscuro, which means “light-dark” in Italian, is a technique that uses strong contrasts to create a sense of volume, depth and dramatic effect.
The exhibit will feature the works of Suzan Noyes and gallery owner Anne Milligan.
Noyes has worked in advertising as a colorist and illustrator and also as a muralist. Her artwork has been exhibited in solo shows and juried exhibitions over the past 40 years.
Noyes enjoys painting natural subjects such as trees, foliage, florals, landscapes and seascapes.
“Nature attracts me with ever-changing lights and darks that lend drama to simple views,” Noyes said. “Recently I’ve found early traditional methods of Still Life and studio vignettes alluring. My work for this exhibit has been an intriguing experiment for me. I’ve retained my love of color and use of intense lights and darks in these pieces, but I’ve used a different approach, creating smaller paintings, in a different manner than usual, and incorporating the frame as an integral part of the works and artistic process.”
Milligan, who studied fashion design in New York City, has designed costumes for avante-garde off-off Broadway productions.
She’s etched portraits into granite with diamond scribes, created plans for highly functional cabinetry as an interior designer, painted commissioned portraits on her laptop while traveling, and now works as a pastelist in her Sequim studio.
A member of the Northwest Pastel Society, Milligan’s paintings have been juried into regional and international exhibitions and hang in private collections across the country and in Europe.
“I’ve always been intrigued by chiaroscuro works,” Milligan said. “I’m at home using the technique and incorporating it, to some extent, in most of what I paint. I imagine that’s because I was taught traditionally, using charcoal before color, and from working for so many years on deep black granite.
“I’m thrilled to be painting in this familiar dramatic style for this exhibit. It captures that ethereal quality of bringing mystery and life to the canvas so well, and invites the viewer to come in for a closer look.”
• The Habitat Boutique Store, 213 E. Washington St., will have live music by Reckless Dove from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
• La Petite Maison Blanche, 213 E. Washington St., will feature curated gifts and festive treats throughout the shop.
• The Rain Shadow Artisans will be at Whimsey Park, 130 E. Washington St. The organization’s mission is to support, encourage and inspire artisans to practice and share with the community through group events.
• Sofie’s Flowers, 127 W. Washington St., will host a blooms bar from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The bar will feature a selection of locally grown flowers for visitors to create bouquets to take home to give to others.
• Forage Gifts and Northwest Treasures, 121 W. Washington St., will feature work by local artists and gifts from Washington and the Olympic Peninsula.
• Sequim Spice and Tea, 139 W. Washington St., will have unique art, including glass, pottery, illustration and local artists’ photography. Participants also can find creative tea blends, colorful teapots and cups and culinary gifts.
• Rainshadow Cafe, 157 W. Cedar St., will host live music by Dawn and Steve from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Pacific Mist Books, 122 W. Washington St., will offer an eclectic mix of new and vintage books, cards and gifts, including local authors and artists.
• Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., will host live music by High Mileage.
• Over the Fence, 118 E. Washington St., will showcase local makers.
• Soup in the Alley, 138 W. Washington St., will feature a rotation of local artists, live music and treats.
• The Cedarbrook Lavender Gift Shop, 120 W. Washington St., will have farm-fresh lavender creations, treats and vintage décor items.
• The River House Bakery and Cafe, 120 W. Bell St., will host local artists with food and bakery items.
• Pacific Pantry, 229 S. Sequim Ave., will remain open until 7 p.m., showcasing local artists.
• Western Wanderer, 108 W. Washington St., will host live music, decorative, storytelling apparel and creative conversations.
