Free outdoor dance class set for Saturday at Fort Worden

PORT TOWNSEND — A free outdoor dance class is open to movers ages 13 and older — with no experience necessary — at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way, this Saturday.

The Seattle Theatre Group is partnering with Centrum to offer “Seeds of Movement,” with dance teachers Etienne Cakpo and Ellie Sandstrom, from 11 a.m. to noon; registration is available at https://www.tfaforms.com/4891589.

For more information about this event, part of STG’s “Dance This!” series, see STGpresents.org/ece/dance-this and use the “pop-up workshops” link.

“This outdoor workshop will offer the opportunity to safely explore dance within the beautiful landscape of Fort Worden,” said Rex Kinney, dance education and performance manager with Seattle Theatre Group.

“This class is open to movers of all kinds,” he added.

“Every body is welcome.”

“Through Afro contemporary dance and improvisation, participants will be guided through the process of growth,” Kinney said, “through movement and planting the seeds for a rooted foundation to discover creative development.”

Cakpo is an award-winning professional dancer from Benin, West Africa. He specializes in teaching and performing traditional and contemporary African dance styles, and has been building his repertoire for three decades.

The director of Gansango Music & Dance, a dance company registered in Washington state, Cakpo was honored with the 2020 Dance Educator of the Year award from the Dance Educators Association of Washington.

Sandstrom, Velocity Dance Center of Seattle’s 2016 Dance Champion, has studied various forms of dance technique, body conditioning, composition, improvisation and performance at festivals and schools across the country including Cornish College of the Arts, where she received her bachelor of fine arts degree in dance.
