Center’s gallery and program director to discuss participatory art

PORT ANGELES — In the middle of the “pARTicipation” exhibit at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, gallery and program director Sarah Jane will present a free talk at 11 a.m. Saturday.

She’ll discuss participatory art — the kind in the PAFAC’s show — and its colorful history.

Art that people can physically engage with, including the theatrical “happenings” of the early 20th century’s dada and futurist movements, will find its way into Jane’s talk. So will the way participatory art has shaken viewers up.

“It’s an art form that disrupted much of how we think about what art is and its role in society,” she said, “and it continues to push boundaries in the present.

“I love participatory art because it’s very accessible, which isn’t always the case with contemporary art.”

The “pARTicipation” show, featuring pieces visitors can climb into, sit on and otherwise play with, is open through June 30, with PAFAC gallery hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

Admission is free to the center and its surrounding Webster’s Woods Sculpture Park at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. For more about the place and its spring and summer activities, see PAFAC.org or phone 360-457-3532.
