Forks to celebrate holidays with Festival of Trees, Twinkle Parade

Other holiday traditions planned this weekend

FORKS — The Twinkle Parade, Festival of Trees and several other holiday traditions are scheduled this weekend in Forks.

The weekend will begin with the 18th annual Cherish Our Children dinner and auction at 5 p.m. Friday in nearby La Push.

Funds raised at the event sponsored by the Quileute Tribe and the city of Forks at the Akalat Center at 2 By-Yak Loop in La Push will go toward buying Christmas gifts for the young people of Forks and La Push.

Dinner and dessert will be available for purchase and live and silent auctions are planned.

Highlights of the weekend include the 18th annual Twinkle Light Holiday Parade and the 24th annual Soroptimist International of the Rain Forest Festival of Trees.

The open house for the Festival of Trees at the Rainforest Arts Center, 35 N. Forks Ave., will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The decorated trees will be auctioned off at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Live entertainment, refreshments and raffle baskets will be part of the event.

The 18th annual Twinkle Light Holiday Parade will travel from C Street to Wood Street in downtown Forks from 6:30 pm. to 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

At 7 p.m., the Moonlight Madness among Forks area merchants will begin and continue to 10 p.m.

Breakfast with Santa is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday at the Forks Congregational Church, 280 Spartan Ave. The breakfast is sponsored by the West End Business & Professional Association and the church.

Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Pictures with Santa will be $5.

The annual VFW Bazaar will offer crafts, gifts and culinary treats from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the post hall at 110 S. Spartan Ave.

Fresh cinnamon rolls will be available in the morning and lunch later in the day.

Brenda Carlsen and Pam Fries will sign and sell copies of their children’s books on Saturday at Forks Outfitters and Chinook Pharmacy.

Carlsen, a Forks resident, will sign “Wascana’s Amazing Journeyfrom 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Forks Outfitters, 950 S. Forks Ave., and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chinook Pharmacy, 11 S. Forks Ave.

Fries, a former Forks resident now living in Port Angeles, will sign “Something is Eating the Garden” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Chinook Pharmacy and form 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Forks Outfitters.

“Wascana’s Amazing Journey” tells of a young Canada goose that tries to flies south for the winter with his family and friends, but is unable to finish the flight after one of his wings is injured.

A boy discovers the injured goose and they spend the winter together having lots of adventures while Wascana’s wing becomes powerful again.

Illustrations are by Doina Cociuba from the Seattle area.

In “Something’s Eating the Garden,” a child solves the mystery by guessing what could be chomping down on the plants. Guesses include a raccoon, a pig, and even a crocodile — none of which are even close.

Fries is both author and illustrator of the book.
