Folk music set for Concerts in the Woods

COYLE — Curtis & Loretta will perform folk music at Saturday’s Concerts in the Woods.

Curtis Teague and Loretta Simonet will play at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road.

Admission is by donation. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission to guests.

The duo has “carried on the tradition of a traveling folk duo that started with the revival of folk music with Ian & Sylvia, Sonny & Cher, Simon & Garfunkel, and others,” said Norm Johnson, organizer of Concerts in the Woods. “And believe me, this is the real thing.”

Curtis & Loretta are especially known for their incorporation of many folk instruments into their shows, including the Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitars, clawhammer banjo, ukulele, kazoo, harmonica, shakers and spoons.

Both play guitar and mandolin and sing. Teague also plays the mandocello, clawhammer banjo, ukulele and harmonica, while Simonet also plays the Celtic harp, celeste, kazoo and shakers.

They received an Arts Tour Minnesota grant from the State Arts Board in 2010 and were named “Best Acoustic Performers of the Twin Cities” by City Pages in 2002, according to their website at www.curtisandloretta.com.

Their CDs have appeared on “Top Albums of the Year,” at www.folkradio.org, and they’ve received several nominations for Best Acoustic Folk Artist for the Minnesota Music Awards.

They’ve released nine CDs and shared billings with such luminaries as Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Holly Near, Vassar Clements and Claudia Schmidt.

The two wed in 1987 and live in Minneapolis.

A live interview is scheduled with the two on The Phil Andrus Show, “Tossed Salad” on KPTZ 91.9 FM at about 1 p.m today.
