Flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny featured in Maier Hall concert

PORT ANGELES — Dmitri Matheny, an internationally-known jazz flugelhornist, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The concert, which will be backed by Craig Buhler and the David Jones Trio, will be in the Maier Performance Hall on the Peninsula College campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Tickets will be available by cash or check at the door: $12 for general admission and $5 for students with a public school or college ID.

“We welcome Dmitri back to Port Angeles for what has become a hotly anticipated concert event,” said David Jones, head of the college music department.

“He always brings interesting takes on a wide variety of tunes.”

The show will include jazz classics by Duke Ellington and Tadd Dameron; popular tunes by the likes of Patsy Cline and Stevie Wonder; music from “Game of Thrones;” and a generous selection of originals by Matheny and Jones.

Matheny has been awarded “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” in the 46th annual Down Beat International Critics Poll and “Best New Artist” in the 1999 JazzTimes Readers Poll.

He is a prolific composer and lyricist whose published compositions span the jazz, pop, symphonic, choral, chamber and world music genres.

Jones has served as director of Peninsula College’s Jazz Ensemble since 2008. He is also a jazz composer/arranger whose works have been performed by the Bob Curnow Big Band, Jazz Police, Jim Cutler Big Band, Straight No Chaser Big Band (UK), and many college jazz ensembles.
