First Friday StoryNight showcases Maria Potter

PORT TOWNSEND — First Friday StoryNight will feature works from featured guest teller Maria Potter at 7 tonight at the Friends Meetinghouse, 1841 Sheridan St.

Suggested donation is $10.

Local bard Chris Gilbert — whose band Happenstance recently released the album, “The Lark in the Morning” — will be the master of ceremonies. An open mic will follow Potter’s featured presentation.

Attendees register in advance to engage the oral tradition through sharing their stories, songs or spoken poetry.

Gilbert will close the evening with tales and songs reflecting the evening’s theme.

Potter has been storytelling and singing professionally since the 1990s.

In her program, “Tales of True Magic and Travel,” Potter will explore where to find magic in a story through introducing listeners to her grandparents, taking a step into time and traveling to India.

Potter is a storyteller, musician, choreographer and grandmother who recently moved to Jefferson County.

She combines traditions and stories that arise out of her rich experiences as a traveler of many regions of Earth, according to a press release. Her love of nature flourished while growing up on the shores of Bainbridge Island.

Potter has been a participant at storytelling conferences throughout the United States including many National Storytelling Network festivals in Jonesborough, Tenn.

She is constantly buoyed by a mindfulness practice she began on moving to India at age 20.

First Friday StoryNight is a monthly community exploration of the art and ritual of the oral tradition through sharing of old myths, folktales, fairy tales, family, personal and modern stories.

The Quimper Storytelling Guild continues the event’s legacy established by Brian Rohr in 2009 and stewarded from 2013 to 2017 by Aimee Ringle.

The Guild also hosts a Third Sunday StoryCrafting at PT Library at 2:30 p.m. for aspiring and experienced tellers to develop and enhance their craft.
