SEQUIM — The First Friday Art Walk will celebrate with a brown-themed event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at various venues in downtown Sequim.
Maps for the self-guided tour are available at www.sequimartwalk.com.
Special events in November include:
• The Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., will host an opening reception for “Nature vs. Machine” from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The exhibit showcases paintings by Molly Chris White and ceramics by Mike Middlestead.
The exhibit contrasts the organic complexity, adaptability and intricate systems of the natural world and the precision and efficiency of human-made technology.
Both White and Middlestead share their interpretations of that theme with the art in this exhibit.
White, a former teacher, focuses on nature through whimsical interpretations of animals.
“I love capturing the expressions of animals,” White said. “The theme for this show has been a fun challenge for me. Combining a horse with a steampunk background takes whimsy to a whole new level.”
Middlestead, a retired Coast Guard aircraft mechanic, has combined his love of ceramics with the mechanical aspects of his former life.
“I’m very comfortable with machinery and all the parts that make up a piece of equipment,” Middlestead said. “For this show, my pieces combine nature and metal through clay. I love learning new processes when I am creating my art. I’ve learned a lot making these pieces.”
“Nature vs. Machine” will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays throughout November.

• The Sequim Arts Commission will host a reception for its new exhibit, “Black and White,” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 West Cedar St.
For the exhibition, the city invited artists to interpret the classic palette of black, white and a range of grays in any way they saw fit. The resulting submissions explore duality, balance, tension or harmony and celebrate the timeless contrast of light and shadow, form and texture, simplicity and complexity.
Musical entertainment and light refreshments will be available during the reception.
The exhibit will remain on display at the civic center through Jan. 21.
