SEQUIM — Today’s First Friday Art Walk will follow a purple theme, the color of Sequim’s famous lavender blooms.
Organizers invite attendees to see works of art and dress in tints and shades of purple to enjoy a festive night on the town with friends and fellow residents preparing for lavender events this month.
First Friday Art Walk Sequim is a free and self-guided tour of local art venues in Sequim from 5 to 8 p.m. the first Friday of every month. Visit sequimartwalk.com to download and print a map to special events and links.
Several regular Sequim Art Walk venues will be closed following the Independence Day holiday.
The Sequim Arts Advisory Commission will host the opening exhibit and artist reception for “The Beach” at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. A jury reviewed a record 110 pieces of artwork from 50 artists before selecting 40 pieces to be included in the exhibit.
Artists represented are Lora Armstrong, Lynne Armstrong, Gary Bullock, Jane Burkey, Jeannine Chappell, Patrick D. Clark, Gdane Curposney, Melissa Doyel, Christopher Enges, Marilynn Evans, Cindy Fullwiler, John Gussman, Paulette Hill, Rick Hill, David Johannessohn, Mark Kennedy, Rita Kepner, Katherine Loveland, Melissa Mann, Natalie Martin, Stacey Martin-Lopez, Linda Martz, Gail McLain, Sharman Owings, Sallie Radock, Claudia Serafin, Linda Stadtmiller, Morgan Stephenson, Ryoko Toyama, Patty Waite, Donna Wilson-Sommer and Sandy Wolf.
Inside the Sequim council chambers, there will be an Art Talk on the Art Walk that will include demonstrations from local presenters talking about driftwood creations, visual and virtual storytelling and using videography and drone photography.
Presenters include:
• 5:30 p.m. — Tammy Hall, “Creating Animals from Driftwood: A Lesson in Anatomy”
• 6:15 p.m. — Renne Emiko Brock: “Message in a Bottle – Visual and Virtual Storytelling in Art”
• 7 p.m. — Christopher Enges: “The Living Beach: Using Videography & Drone Photography to Capture its Essence”
Also at the Sequim Civic Center, there will be a preview of the creative end tables from Sequim artists for Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County’s “Recycle into Art” Art Auction fundraiser and an opportunity to vote for the community People’s Choice winner.
Design2Scan3D, 207 W. Spruce St., will showcase a member of the Dungeness Bonsai Society making a miniature stoneware mold.
Tristen Beck and Luke Shifflett, new owners of Sunshine Café at 145 W. Washington St. will host an artist who will paint a mural on the wall inside the restaurant.
Sequim Acrobatics members will perform at 5:30 p.m. at Olympic Theatre Arts Gathering Hall, 414 N. Sequim Ave. Dedicated to the art of acrobatics, Sequim Acrobatics members will be performing stunts, gymnastics skills, acro yoga and acrobatic routines. The snack and beverage bar will be open.
Purple Haze Lavender’s downtown store at 127 W. Washington St. will hold a book signing with Bonnie Louise Gillis, author of “The Lavender of Sequim: America’s Provence.”
Tracy Wealth Management, 149 W. Washington St., will host local photographer Phil Tauran. Fascinated by the pictorialist movement of the early 20th century and also impressionism, he invites people to discover an unusual photograph.
Pondicherri, 119 E. Washington St., will feature floral paper artist My Woolly Mammoth, as well as henna artist Ellie Curtis.
Forage Gifts & Northwest Treasures, 121 W. Washington St. will showcase all things that inspire Sequim with creative works from local artists.
Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., will feature art from Jeannine Chappell and Clallam Bay Corrections Center inmates.
Chappell, known for her work with animal images, will exhibit both digital paintings and mixed media paintings in the window. During the opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m., she will discuss her art.
From 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday she will present a free art talk at the gallery. Initiated by Blue Whole member Ken Dvorak and Welfare for Animals Guild, individuals at Clallam Bay’s corrections center will help WAG by making and donating their artwork.
Rainshadow Café, 157 W. Cedar St., will host live music with Hot Llamas, a group that describes themselves as “rural funk” from the Pacific Northwest.
Alder Wood Bistro, 139 W. Alder St. will showcase recent photography of Sequim author-photographer Robert Steelquist. The exhibition, “Square Birds,” features intimate portraits of wild birds that draws the viewer’s gaze to the birds’ eye.
Painter-teacher Shirley Rudolf has arranged for members of North Olympic Watercolorists to display their artwork at First Security Bank, 114 S. Sequim Ave., and members of Rudolf’s Art Group to display their artwork at Harbor Audiology & Hearing Center, 538 N. Fifth Ave.
