Finnriver to celebrate World Apple Day in Chimacum

Hours will be from noon to 6 p.m. for the event in celebration of food and community.

CHIMACUM — Finnriver will continue its tradition of celebrating World Apple Day on Sunday, but it will be in a new location this year.

For the first time, the day will be feted at the new Finnriver Orchard &Cider Garden at 124 Center Road in Chimacum, the 50-acre site of the former Chimacum Dairy just south of the four-way intersection in Chimacum. Hours will be from noon to 6 p.m.

“World Apple Day is a public celebration of all of the things we grow here together: good food and good community,” said Crystie Kisler, Finnriver co-founder.

“We also want to honor the roots of this agricultural region and to enjoy the fruits of the season.”

The World Apple Day event was inspired by festivals in England honoring old orchards, she said.

Finnriver has hosted a local community apple event for five years, inviting people onto the farm to celebrate the season and the harvest of the orchard.

Finnriver relocated from its original location in May. The new farm location is home now to Finnriver’s organic orchard of more than 5,500 traditional and heirloom cider apples and perry pears, along with fields of organic grains, vegetables, flowers and seed crops.

This year’s celebration will include live music by the Scratch Dog String Band from noon to 3 p.m., performances by Sound &Fury traditional Morris dancers, a bagpipe parade into the orchard, apple identification with the North Olympic Fruit Club and orchard walking tours with performer Kenn Mann as “Johnny Appleseed.”

Wood-fired pizza will be served hot out of the Dented Buoy oven all day with special apple-inspired variations, along with tamales from Mama’s Harvest, local oysters from Hama Hama and apple tarts from the Crust Kitchen. Sugar Hill Confections will be on hand with organic caramel apples, kettle corn and organic cotton candy.

The cidery tasting room will be open and will feature Finnriver’s hard ciders and fruit wines.

All people are welcome; they are asked to leave their dogs at home.

Here is the schedule:

• Noon to 3 p.m. — Music with break at 1:30 p.m. for dancers.

• 1:30 p.m — Morris dancers.

• 2 p.m. — Orchard tour.

• 3 p.m. — Morris dancers.

• 4 p.m. — Bagpipe parade.
