PORT ANGELES — The Coastal Watershed Institute and Patagonia will co-sponsor a free showing of a new documentary, “Blue Heart,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Patagonia’s film showing will be at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave. It will be outdoors — at the north end of the top level of the parking lot — unless weather or light conditions aren’t conducive.
“If conditions warrant, we will have it downstairs,” at the north end of the lower portion of the building, said Anne Shaffer of the watershed institute.
Attendees are invited to bring their own snacks and beverages, according to a news release.
The release said that the Balkan region — known as the “blue heart of Europe, richly diverse in cultures, languages and history — is home to the last wild rivers on the European continent, but hydropower is putting the rivers at risk.
Nearly $870 million has been poured into the construction of dams in the area, the release said.
The film argues that dams aren’t clean or efficient and will only upset the delicate balance of a river system, including the critical nature in the Balkan Peninsula.
“Blue Heart” takes a closer look at the people fighting displacement due to the proposed 3,000 hydropower projects in the area and exploring the actions that must be taken to shelter the picturesque environment.
