Film fest venues, special events

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Film Festival spreads out today through Sunday, showing scores of short and feature-length movies, many with actors and directors on hand to engage in conversation afterward.

For passes, information, a free program and coffee, stop by the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., where the hospitality suite is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Volunteers in red PTFF caps and managers in black PTFF caps are downtown and ready to answer questions.

These screenings and programs are available to pass holders and rush-ticket buyers unless otherwise noted. For free events, patrons are encouraged to arrive early for a place in line.

Today

• 1:30 p.m. — First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St.: A Community Conversation with actor and activist Danny Glover and Rais Bhuiyan, founder of World Without Hate, on using notoriety for social good and cultural bridge-building. Free.

• 4 p.m. — Haller Fountain at Taylor and Washington streets: Opening Ceremony with filmmakers arriving in classic cars for a salmon dinner.

• 6:30 p.m. — American Legion: A Special Evening with Danny Glover. This includes a screening of Glover’s film “To Sleep with Anger,” directed by Charles Burnett. Afterward, Rose Theatre founder Rocky Friedman interviews Glover.

Saturday

• 10 a.m. — Jefferson County Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St.: Filmmakers’ panel: “What Does a Producer Do?” Free.

• 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Dogs on Taylor brings three service dog organizations to Taylor Street outside the Rose Theatre. In this free event, people and dogs will be on hand to meet and greet visitors and viewers of the movie “Pick of the Litter,” which will screen at the Rose at 6:30 tonight and 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

• 3:15 p.m. — Rose Theatre: A Tribute to Frank Buxton with the silent film “Steamboat Bill Jr.” with live music by Miles and Karina.

• 6:30 p.m. — American Legion: “Return to Mount Kennedy” documentary with Bobby and Leif Whitaker and director Eric Becker.

Sunday

• 8 a.m. — American Legion: Bicycle ride to warm up for the movie “Afghan Cycles.” Cyclists with passes or rush tickets enjoy a PTFF stainless steel water bottle and reserved seats at the 9:30 a.m. screening.

• 10 a.m. — Jefferson County Museum of Art & History: Filmmakers’ panel of storytelling. Free.

• Noon — Starlight Room: A Special Afternoon with Charles Burnett, Oscar-winning director, and his newest documentary “The Power to Heal.”

• Noon — Cotton Building: “Return to Mount Kennedy” screens with Bobby and Leif Whittaker and director Eric Becker.

• 6 p.m. — Cotton Building: Women in Film encore screening of “My Love Affair with the Brain: The Life and Science of Dr. Marian Diamond” with directors Catherine Ryan and Gary Weinberg.

• 6:30 p.m. — Rose Theatre: PTFF Awards Presentation of prizes for best narrative feature, best documentary feature, the Jim Ewing Young Director Award and the Spirit of the Port Townsend Film Festival award. Free with tickets at the door.
