Fifth Street Community Garden walks return for 2019

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Master Gardeners monthly garden walks at the Port Angeles Fifth Street Community Garden are slated to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Fifth Street Community Garden is at 328 E. Fifth St., just off Peabody Street and across from City Hall.

Second Saturday Garden Walks are free and open to the public and occur rain or shine. They will continue every second Saturday until Sept. 14.

Led by Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Jeanette Stehr-Green, Audreen Williams and Laurel Moulton, the walks are 90 minutes and feature highlights of what is happening in the gardens and information on a range of sustainable gardening practices.

The April garden walk focuses on getting a jump on the short gardening season, soil testing and crop rotation. Vegetable varietals that do well in this area will be discussed. Come learn and share your gardening experiences.

According to a news release, the walks are ideal for people starting a vegetable garden for the first time and gardeners who are new to the Pacific Northwest, but also are beneficial to the more experienced gardener.

The garden includes more than 50 9-foot-by-12 foot plots. The garden was developed on city property in 2011 with a vision to connect people to the earth and their community through growing food.

Master Gardeners also are available for one-on-one garden advice at the Community Garden on Mondays through mid-October from 10 a.m. to noon.

Master Gardeners are volunteer community educators — cultivating plants, people and communities.

For more information on the program or Second Saturday Garden Walks, call the Clallam County program coordinator at 360-565-2679.
