Fiber arts, paintings on exhibit during Gallery Walk

PORT TOWNSEND — “Green Blue Magic,” a fiber arts show created by members of the Surface Design Association, will open today at the Port Townsend School of the Arts downtown location.

The show, which is in celebration of Earth Day on April 22 will be exhibited at 236 Taylor St., throughout April.

Surface Design Association (SDA) members will be available during Port Townsend Gallery Walk from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday along with other faculty-artists, to talk about their work and the classes they offer.

This fiber art installation of Port Townsend School of the Arts (PTSA) will be complemented by PTSA faculty art.

More than 15 artists from PTSA faculty and the local Surface Design Association are participating in the show.

They are presenting a wide array of texturally designed items including quilts and banners, scarves, felted materials, jewelry and up- cycled assemblages.

“The collection is rich in color, form and texture, providing a unique artists’ view into the Green Blue Magic of our environment,” organizers said.

PTSA is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to bringing out the artist in everyone.

It is located at Fort Worden. Also set during Gallery Walk:

• Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., will feature the works of Anne Schneider and Stephen Cunliffe from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Schneider, who lives in Port Townsend, creates abstract mixed media art works.

Her works are created through the layering of papers and paints and the positioning of color values throughout until a finished piece emerges.

Each piece tells a story — where chaos meets order, where imagination provides observation, organizers said.

Photographer Cunliffe moved to the Olympic Peninsula 12 years ago, not least because of the opportunities he saw here to pursue his passion for nature photography.

In 2009, he won the Canon Nature Photographer of the Year award with his popular image Avocet Kiss.

“I am able to create value with my photography, and I give that value straight back to the conservation of nature,” he said.

His exhibit at the Port Townsend Gallery also will include some of his prize-winning work in black and white photography, and some color abstracts.

• Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., will present “Alchemy,” in the Artist Showcase in April.

Three 2-D artists and one 3-D artist are spotlighted and each modifies traditional materials to illustrate their artistic vision. Featured artists for April include Tamera Abate, Suzanne Eller, Jim Ferrara and Kathleen Secrest.

The sixth annual Northwind Arts Center Artist Showcase is a juried art exhibition for Puget Sound emerging and professional artists of all disciplines.

Work from the 24 2-D and eight 3-D selected artists will be exhibited in the newly remodeled Jeanette Best Gallery throughout the year.

Artists were selected for this year’s showcase by juror Bruce Cody, a full-time working artist who also has 17 years of experience as a university art instructor and has been represented in prestigious national galleries, with more than 25 one-man shows.

An opening reception for “Alchemy” is slated for 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday during Gallery Walk.

• Gallery 9, 1012 Water St., will showcase the work of painter Katy Morse and her work in feminine mysticism.

Of her work, Morse said, “I am student of feminine mysticism, reclaiming the feminine face of God and the divine essence of myself as a woman.

“I am on a mythical adventure of painting images representing the re-emergence of the wisdom of women, and the unified power of our healing the planet after centuries of abuse.”

Morse will discuss her work during Gallery Walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
