Fashion show details the home front during WWII

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Historical Society will present Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, or how the home front survived and improvised during World War II, at its annual fashion show/luncheon fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The show will be at the Elks Naval Lodge, 131 E. First St.

Tickets are $25 for members of the historical society and the Elks and $30 for non-members.

They must be purchased in advance and are available from the historical society.

For tickets and information, call the society at 360-452-2662 or email artifact@olypen.com.

Lunch will be catered by the Elks.

Historical society volunteers will model fashions from the 1940s, including suits and house dresses.

The finale will feature evening gowns.

Exhibits will showcase what life was like on the home front during World War II.

The show’s narrative will explore how people rolled up their sleeves and coped with the changes brought on by the war.

The role of women in Port Angeles — as in towns and cities all over the country — changed dramatically.

Volunteers came out to help the war effort by becoming observers of the Aircraft Warning Service.

The filter board, where flights of airplanes were plotted, was operated by women volunteers 24 hours a day.

The USO was located in the Elks Naval Lodge.
