Family concert to be presented Saturday

SEQUIM — The Sequim Community Orchestra and the Sequim Community Youth Orchestra will perform a family concert at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The community concert is at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The orchestra is directed by Phil Morgan-Ellis and the director of the youth orchestra is Sara Baldwin.

Saturday’s program includes:

• The fourth movement, allegro ma non troppo (which means fast, but not overly so) from Antonin Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony.

• The Five Courtly Dances from the opera Gloriana by Benjamin Britten.

• Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto grosso in G minor, Op. 6, No. 8, commonly known as the “Christmas Concerto” because the score bears an inscription “Fatto per la notte di Natale” (made for the night of Christmas.)

The Youth Orchestra’s beginner, intermediate and advanced groups will each share what they’ve worked on during after-school classes this year.

The orchestra is a nonprofit organization whose youth strings program provides professional strings education to all interested youth.

The orchestra maintains an inventory of quality stringed instruments that youths can use at no cost and graduate to larger instruments as they grow.

The organization depends on private donations to fund highly qualified music instruction, instrument purchase and maintenance and scholarships.

This is the second of three concerts scheduled for the 2023-2024 season. The third will be in June.

The family concert is free, but there is a bake sale to support the youth orchestra.
