Evening of songs for flute slated for Thursday

PORT TOWNSEND — Circle of Flutes will make a debut performance at a special Candlelight Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday showcasing an array of flutes.

The evening of songs for flute, “Garden of Possibilities,” will be at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. Admission is by a suggested $10 donation and children will be admitted free. Refreshments will be served following the performance.

The concert will feature selected original compositions composed by members of Circle of Flutes as well as a variety of other contemporary and classical song selections.

Circle of Flutes is an eight-member flute choir formed in 1989. The performance includes the concert, alto and bass flutes, the piccolo, and often the rare contrabass flute.

Circle of Flutes performs a range of styles including classical, folk, jazz, Latin and sacred music. Performers include Alexis Merritt, Ann Lindquist, Barbara Oakley, Denise Schwedhelm, Marilyn Swanson, Mary MacRae and Molly Bernard.

The theme of this concert will focus on the debut of Lindquist’s original flute choir composition called “Garden of Possibilities.” It’s a love song for Lindquist’s grandchildren.

“The excellent musicianship of the members and long history of the group contribute to a beautifully blended sound,” organizers said. “Those unfamiliar with the sound of a flute choir will be surprised by the full orchestrations provided by the combination of different flute voices.”
