Ernst photography among attractions in Port Angeles this weekend

PORT ANGELES — Award-winning photographer Ernst-Ulrich Schafer will be the featured artist at Harbor Art during the Second Saturday Art Walk in Port Angeles.

Schafer, who has shot fine art photography — generally in black-and-white — for more than 40 years, is a member of the Harbor Art cooperative and will be available along with other member artists at the gallery from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Those who missed Harbor Art’s grand opening in its new location in April can see it now. The gallery moved from 110 E. Railroad Ave. to 114 N. Laurel St.

Schafer was awarded the Professional Photographers of Washington Portrait Photographer of the Year 2016 Award.

He is constantly working several personal projects: abstracts, calla lilies, landscapes, street photography, Native Americans, historical documentation, as well as fine art portraiture.

Ernst Fine Art Photography started out on Laurel Street in 2000, then moved to the upstairs space next to Studio Bob at 118½ E. Front St., at the beginning of 2016.

Here is roundup of other special events this weekend.

• The Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., on the first floor of The Landing mall, will feature artist Linda Stadtmiller in May. She and other artists will be available from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Light refreshments are served.

Stadtmiller, who is known for seascapes and depictions of local scenes, has been working at The Landing Artists Studio for five years. She is past president of Sequim Arts, now named the Olympic Peninsula Art Association.

Three years ago, she suffered a massive stroke on her dominant left side. Since then, she has learned to paint using her right hand.

“Her new style is different, but a direction she has always wanted to go,” said Pamela Dick of the gallery.

The Landing Artists Studio has six full-time and five part-time artists that create art on-site. The public is welcome to watch, ask questions, and interact with the artists at the gallery from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., will feature local band Professor and artist Cherish Dahinden tonight for 2nd Friday Art Rock.

The party will get started at 9 p.m. as Dahinden creates explosions of vivid and deep color while musicians perform. A $3 cover charge will help support the musicians and artists.

Fronted by Stew Mueller’s guitar and vocal stylings and filled out by Randi Bennett’s (bass and vocals) and Jerry Gilleland’s (drums) rhythm expertise plus extra layers by Ed Shisslak, Professor delivers rock and blues.

Dahinden grew up loving the local landscape and creating art in Port Angeles. She has won various local awards for her art.

• Studio Bob (upstairs) at 118 1/2 E. Front St., will host “George’s World — The Art of George Zien” with an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with hours on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

A no-host bar will be open in The Loom next door to the studio upstairs.

Zien moved to Sequim in 2001 from Arizona where he had a sign and screen print business. His artistic talents were a large part of his business, but it wasn’t until after retirement that he was able to explore and develop his own art — watercolors.

“George has been a mentor to many whether it is through his life drawing sessions in his studio or through his generosity and involvement in the art community,” said Bob Stokes, gallery owner.

”George believes in the ‘golden rule’ of painting that the artist must lead the viewer into the painting. Anyone that has seen George’s art would agree that he does just that. His paintings welcome you into the world as he sees it,” Stokes added.

For more information about Zien, visit http://sequimarts.org/news/ or contact him at studiozien@aol.com.

• One of A Kind Art Gallery, 115 E. Railroad Ave, Suite 105, in The Landing mall, will feature demonstrations by the artists of the month, Loa Malakoff and Christie Aphrodite, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Live music and refreshments will be offered.
