Equine Network to host fundraiser barn dance at Foxbell Ranch

SEQUIM — An old-style dance — the Olympic Peninsula Equine Network first annual Fundraiser Barn Dance — is set for 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The organization, known as OPEN, will host the fundraiser at the Fox Bell Farm, 137 N. Barr Road.

Tickets are $55 and include dinner and dancing to tunes from recording artists the Buck Ellard Band and a DJ.

Beer and wine will be available for purchase.

Tickets are available at the organization’s website, olypenequinenet.org/events.

All proceeds will benefit OPEN’s horse rescue rehabilitation and adoption program. OPEN is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the North Olympic Peninsula for 12 years.

According to its website, OPEN takes in horses to find new homes for them or place them in long term foster care if their riding days are behind them.

The group evaluates each horse, giving it whatever may be needed — feed, veterinary or hoof care, and time to recover from trauma or just finish growing up. OPEN members then try to find the best match for them in a new home situation.

According to information published by the Humane Society of the United States, approximately 100,000 horses are sent every year to slaughter facilities in Canada and Mexico.

The USDA has documented that “92.3 percent of the horses sent to slaughter are in good condition and are able to live out a productive life.”
