ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS: Fourth Friday Readings set for tonight … and other items

SEQUIM — The Lodge at Sherwood, 660 Evergreen Farm Way, will host Fourth Friday Readings — an evening of five-minute open-mic readings of poetry, short stories and memoirs — at 6:30 tonight.

The readings, produced by Writers on the Spit, will take place in the Media Room. The Media Room is accessible to the disabled, with an elevator to the second floor.

Due to the holiday season, readings on family and home are particularly welcome, organizers said.

There is no fee for this event, which is open to the public.

Both new and experienced writers are welcome to participate.

Writers’ names are drawn randomly for reading position.

Five-minute readings are timed, so please rehearse in advance.

Published writers are welcome to bring their books and sell before and after the event.

Guidelines for the event are available via lindab myers@yahoo.com.

PT benefit concert

PORT TOWNSEND — First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St., at 4 p.m. Sunday will host a holiday concert by the Ladies’ Chamber Orchestra & Benevolent Society.

Admission is by donation with proceeds benefiting the Community Outreach Association Shelter Team (COAST) Winter Shelter. None will be turned away for inability to pay, organizers said.

COAST serves single men and single women ages 18 and older, operating on a first-come, first-served basis with military veterans, senior citizens and the disabled prioritized for service.

The orchestra will perform a variety of musical eras and styles including Renaissance, Baroque, classical, Celtic, contemporary and traditional pieces.

They will be joined in this concert by guest musicians Lee Inman on viola da gamba — a quartet of madrigal singers — soprano Phina Pipia, the Swan School Children’s Choir and Otto Smith on concertina.

OTA concert

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., will present “A Very Whisky Christmas,” featuring the Whisky Minstrels at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The concert will take place in the Gathering Hall.

An artists reception will follow the performance.

Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased online at www.olympic theatrearts.org, at the OTA box office located at 414 N. Sequim Ave., or by calling 360-683-7326.

All proceeds will benefit Olympic Theatre Arts.

During the performance, Bruce Coughlan and Nolan Murray will team up to share music and stories of the Christmas season.

Their music reflects years spent drawing influences from the tap-root of roots music, which includes anything from blues, gospel, American folk, to Native American and even Celtic, according to a news release.

“We are fortunate to have these two fine musicians at Olympic Theatre Arts,” said Carol Willis, OTA executive director.

“It is so fitting, on the weekend after Thanksgiving, to usher in the holiday season by celebrating with music and words from diverse cultures within our country and abroad.

Coughlan is a Canadian songwriter and collector of songs and the founding member of Tiller’s Folly, a Pacific Northwest acoustic power trio.

Murray is a multi-instrumentalist proficient on the fiddle, mandolin and mandocaster who has lent his musical talents to a list of iconic performers such as Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee, John Fogerty, The Irish Rover, Randy Travis and John Cowan, according to the release.

His awards include Oregon State Fiddle Champion, top 10 U.S. National Fiddle Champion, International World Bluegrass Championship Band and Western Canadian Bluegrass Fiddle Champion.

Murray also played alongside Coughlan with Tiller’s Folly.
