PORT TOWNSEND — The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will conduct its final concert of the season at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The concert will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St.
All are welcome; a free will offering donation of $15, $20 or $25 is asked.
Those 18 and under will be admitted free.
The festival’s eighth and final performance in 2019 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church features quartets stretching through the 18th century and ranging from a Paris Quartet from 1738 for these instruments by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) to a sonata by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) for violin, flute and cello with harpsichord continuo.
Five quartets with obbligato [or fully written out] harpsichord will be presented: two by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 – 1788) with flute, viola and cello, and three extremely rarely heard quartets for obbligato harpsichord, flute, violin and cello by little-known late 18th-century composers Tommaso Giordani (c. 1730-1806), J. Schmittbauer (1718 – 1809) and Johann Gottlieb Naumann (1741 – 1801).
For nine years, the Salish Sea Early Music Festival has provided period instrument performances in Port Townsend and around the Puget Sound with musicians from Europe and all around the United States and Canada.
Alongside well-loved repertoire, the performers bring modern day premieres of unpublished works and explore unfamiliar musical genres and instrumental textures with a fresh new approach, according to a press release.
The Salish Sea Early Music Festival is a prolific group performing early music in the Pacific Northwest, with 84 concerts included in the 2019 festival alone.
