Early Music at the Grange begins Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — Schola Galante will begin a series of three music concerts at the Quimper Grange that will focus on 17th Century and 18th Century music played on instruments appropriate to the period.

The Early Music at the Grange concert will be conducted Saturday at 1219 Corona Ave. in Port Townsend. The doors will open at 2:30 p.m. and the concert, co-sponsored by KPTZ, will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Schola Galante will focus on music from the court of Frederick the Great, ruler of Prussia from 1740-1786. The so-called “Berlin School,” of which he was a generous patron, attracted more than 25 of the finest European composers and performers whose creations — chamber and orchestral music, as well as operas — epitomized the latest evolution of musical styles, event organizers said. Most of his brilliant musicians have since faded into obscurity, but their influence on subsequent generations of composers (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) was profound, the said.

Frederick was also a talented amateur flutist. Most of the music written under his sponsorship demonstrates the capabilities of the Baroque flute.

Ensemble members are Dahti Blanchard, Lee Inman, Miguel Rodé and Douglass Hjelm.

Organizers have asked attendees to wear face masks.
