Dance concerts from Bill Evans conference begin Friday

PORT TOWNSEND — Three different contemporary dance concerts featuring nationally-prominent choreographers will be performed in the JFK Hall at Fort Worden as part of the ninth annual Bill Evans Somatic Dance Conference, which will be held in Port Townsend for the first time this summer.

The scholar/artists performing in these shows will share their research in daytime sessions and their art in the evenings. They are from all over the United States.

Each concert was curated by Bill Evans and each will be entirely different.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. with doors open at 6:30 p.m.

All shows are suitable for all ages, including children 5 and older.

The first dance concert, Summer Dance 1, will be at 7 p.m. Friday.

Admission will be pay-what-you-can at the door, with $5, $10, $15 or $20 suggested.

On Saturday, performance artist, writer and choreographer Claire Porter will be the featured performer at Summer Dance II.

Tickets for the special Saturday show will be available in advance online or at the door. Price is $25 (plus service fee if purchasing online) at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/6038749.

Porter performed at the Key City Public Theatre in January 2020 and left audiences wanting more of her “heart-stabbing hilarity,” organizers said.

Evans and Don Halquist will perform a new Porter piece in that same concert, the fifth of her works they have commissioned.

Summer Dance III will be Friday, July 28, with pay-what-you-can admission.
