Concerts in the Barn series continues with Trio Hava

QUILCENE — The music of Lili Boulanger, a French composer whose talents became clear when she was a young girl, will fill the air at Trillium Woods Farm this weekend.

The Concerts in the Barn (CITB) series of free performances — both inside the barn and piped outside to the lawn — stars the chamber group Trio Hava at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. While there’s no cost to attend, tickets should be reserved in advance at concertsinthebarn.org via the “Free Tickets Required” link.

Trio Hava is three women: Seattle Symphony violinist Elisa Barston, cellist Amy Barston of Swarthmore, Pa., and pianist Jessica Choe of Chicago, who’s making her first trip to play at the farm. The spread, at 7360 Center Road, is the setting for the summer chamber music series continuing each weekend through Aug. 29.

Throughout the series, only fully vaccinated patrons may sit inside the barn, in pews or on the hay bales in the loft. Guests who aren’t yet immunized against COVID-19 — or who prefer to be outdoors — are invited to sit on the lawn.

Lawn chairs, picnic blankets and picnics are welcome, and if space allows, concert-goers who do not have reservations are welcome to sit on the lawn. Thanks to amplifiers surrounding the barn, patrons outdoors can hear the music wherever they sit, said Leigh Hearon, CITB volunteer executive director.

For information, phone 360-732-0732 or email concertsinthebarn@gmail.com.

Barn seating is limited to 75 percent of capacity, and guests are asked to wear face coverings inside.

“We are sadly but firmly adhering to the new guidelines on masks,” Hearon said.

“I am reminding our audience that mask guidelines do not apply to musical instruments, so they still will hear beautiful music emanating from the barn all summer long.”

This weekend, that music will include Boulanger’s “D’un Matin de Printemps,” Beethoven’s “Ghost” Piano Trio in D major and Brahms’ Trio in B major, Opus 8.

Music lovers are invited to come early, Hearon added, as the farm opens at 11 a.m. each concert day.

At 1 p.m., the barn doors open so vaccinated patrons can choose their seats.
