Concerts in the Barn offers musicians ‘right at home’ venue

QUILCENE — Festival favorites Charles Wetherbee, Korine Fujiwara, Walter Gray and David Korevaar will perform for the fourth weekend of chamber music of the Concerts in the Barn’s 2017 season.

Musicians will perform free concerts at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Alan Iglitzin’s historic barn, 7630 Center Road. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The barn opens at 11 a.m.

Wetherbee will play the violin, Fujiwara the viola, Gray the cello and Korevaar the piano.

Saturday’s program will offer Schubert’s “Fantasy in C Major, D.934” and “Rondo Brillante in B minor, D.895, Op. 70,” as well as Prokofiev’s “Violin Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 94bis.”

Sunday’s program will be Mozart’s “Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493,” Bridge’s “Phantasie Piano Quartet in F-sharp minor” and Brahms’ “Piano Quartet No. 2 A Major, Op. 26.”

“I am delighted to return to the Olympic Peninsula to perform in the magical setting of the Iglitzin barn, the site of so many happy musical memories,” Wetherbee said.

“Our Saturday concert features music for violin and piano, including the Schubert Fantasy and Rondo Brilliante, two of Schubert’s most virtuosic and dynamic works.

“On Sunday, we will reunite last summer’s piano quartet. … I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend than with these wonderful musicians performing for our warm and welcoming audiences. I am honored to be asked to return.”

Fujiwara echoed Wetherbee, saying, “I look forward to once again performing chamber music in such a beautiful setting with many of my favorite musicians. The audiences always make us feel right at home.”

Originally conceived as a summer home for the Philadelphia Quartet — of which Iglitzin is a founding member — the farm has presented concerts in the barn every summer since 1984.

Guests are invited to come early, picnic on the grounds, stroll through the gardens and then enjoy the afternoon concert. Bottled water will be available without charge.

Finnriver Cidery will sell its cider by the glass in the milking shed each concert day. Sale proceeds will be donated to help support Jefferson County Youth and Family Music programs.

Guests with mobility issues should call 360-732-0732 before the day of the concert to ensure an aisle seat will be reserved for them.
