Concert to mark Beethoven’s birthday

LA CONNER — The Salish Sea Early Music Festival of Port Townsend will partner with the Skagit Early Keyboard Museum to present two matinees in celebration of the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven in La Conner this weekend.

Both the Saturday and Sunday matinees will be at 3 p.m. at the museum at 16917 View Lane in La Conner at Snee-Oosh Point.

Admission will be by donation of $15, $20 or $25. Those 18 and under will be admitted free.

The location is 40 miles — abut 59 minutes — from the Coupeville ferry terminal. Jeffrey Cohan, artistic director of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival, requests an RSVP to salishseafestival@aol.com.

Cohan will play an eight-keyed flute made in London in 1820 and Hans-Jürgen Schnoor will play a replica of the Johann Fritz grand fortepiano created in Vienna in 1814.

The program will include the final three solo fortepiano Sonatas, opp. 109, 110 and 111, composed between 1820 and 1821. Schnoor will be accompanied by Cohan playing selections from National Airs with Variations for Fortepiano with Flute, opus 105 and 107 composed in 1818-1819.

The following Saturday, March 7, the Salish Sea Early Music Festival will return to Port Townsend to perform at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St.

Susie Napper on cello will join Schnoor on the harpsichord and Cohan on baroque flute.
