Comedy explores dynamics of a changing book club

PORT TOWNSEND — A once-congenial book club implodes in Key City Public Theatre’s latest comedy.

“The Book Club Play,” written by Karen Zacarias, will be performed through Oct. 21 at the Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington St., Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. It opened Thursday.

Tickets cost $20 on Thursdays and Sundays and $24 on Fridays and Saturdays. Pay-what-you-wish performances take place this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets available

Tickets can be purchased at www.keycitypublic theatre.org, by phone at 360-385-5278 or in person at the box office.

The play explores how the intimate relationships of a long-stable book club become strained when new members join.

“What follows is, in essence, ‘Lord of the Flies,’ but with wine and dip,” the theater group said.

Familiar faces

Directed by the theater’s artistic apprentice, Brendan Chambers, “The Book Club Play” will feature a cast of familiar faces.

Jennifer True, last seen at KCPT in 2016’s “Women in Jeopardy,” is Ana.

Dylan Carter, who played several characters in August’s Shakespeare in the Park production of “Henry IV Part I,” is Will.

Crystal Eisele, who played Hovstadt in April’s “Enemy of the People,” is Jen.

Tom Challinor, who produced a visceral reaction of boos after his performance as the villainous Worcestor in “Henry IV Part I,” also performs.

Brenda Nascimento makes her KCPT debut as Lilly. Eric Newman, last seen as Don John in “Much Ado About Nothing,” rounds out the cast as Rob.

Post-performance discussions with the cast and artistic staff will take place on two Sundays — this coming Sunday and Oct. 15 — and two Thursdays — Oct. 12 and 19.
