Collages, paintings, jewelry, twists on paper to be seen on PT Gallery Walk

PORT TOWNSEND — Collages, paintings, jewelry and interesting uses for paper will be highlighted during the Port Townsend Gallery Walk on Saturday.

The self-guided walk will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Ceramic cups for wine served at galleries on the walk are available for a $10 donation to Olympic Neighbors at Coldwell Banker/Best Homes at 234 Taylor St.

The reusable cups are a benefit for the nonprofit that provide housing support for adults with developmental disabilities and also is an effort to keep plastic out of landfills.

The Coldwell Banker office routinely features an artist on the Port Townsend Gallery Walk.

This month, the artist is David Miller, who is exhibiting his photos on canvas.

Other galleries participating in this month’s Gallery Walk include:

• Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., will feature the work of artists Stephanie Johnson and Pamela Brown.

Browning creates paper-based multi-media collages. Organizers said they range from those akin to quilt-making in their precise style and geometric patterns to more improvisational pieces which reveal themselves as choices about color, edge definition and placement are made.

She began working with paper when, recovering from breast cancer surgery, she found healing in scouring the color-rich magazines friends brought and tearing out images of varying texture, pattern and color — creating the first renditions of her current work.

Johnson is a classically trained artist and graduate of the Aristides Atelier at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle.

Her oil paintings invite viewers to experience the glow and mystery of the old masters, exhibit organizers said.

She has traditionally been inspired to use vibrant colors in her pieces.

Johnson’s career began at a young age. At 12, she entered her first gallery, Artisans on Taylor in Port Townsend, and by 14, she had incorporated her own business.

Johnson said in a news release: “With this exhibition, it was my goal to bring the techniques of the Dutch Masters into a contemporary setting. I desired to capture the feeling of atmosphere and subtleties of light in each painting; creating a celebration of beauty discovered in our natural world. Whether it is sunlit Tuscan hills, treasured shells from the ocean or pears from a local garden, everything pays tribute to the wonder of nature.”

• Port Townsend School of the Arts Downtown, 236 Taylor St., will feature original jewelry by Kathy Van Kleeck, on display and for sale in a special trunk show of her collection.

Van Kleeck calls her signature style “Urban Primitive.” Her medium of choice is a relatively new material called precious metal clay, which is precious or base metals in a clay-like base. After forming, the elements are fired in a kiln, a process that burns out the clay and leaves the now-fused metal (18k gold, silver, steel or bronze) in beautiful form.

Van Kleeck will be on hand until 8 p.m. Saturday at PtSA Downtown.

Of the new show Van Kleeck said, “I will be offering an array of talismans and tools, each designed to enrich daily life and help us connect with our higher selves. The intention for my current body of work is to engage as many of the senses as possible. Listen to the jangling elements of the Magpie Talismans. Feel the textures of the different elements used, metals, fiber, leather and wood. Inhale the earthy and complex Intuitive Perfume blends, blessing spray and incense, the residual tang of indigo. Take a deep, cleansing breath and enjoy.”

• Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., opened its new exhibit, “Uncommon Paper,” on Thursday and will host an opening reception during Gallery Walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Uncommon Paper” will feature the work of Lois James, Jean-Marie Tarascio, Dorothy McGuinness, Danielle Bodine, Mary Ashton, Sande Wascher-James and Zia Gipson.

Two thousand years after paper was created in China, the seven artists have thrown out the idea of paper as a mere carrier for the written word or substrate for drawing, collage and paint, according to a news release.

In their hands, paper becomes jewelry, light catching banners, sculpture, baskets, shelters, books and the vessels from which stories emerge.

Their exhibit will run through May 26 at Northwind.
