Classical pianist to perform Thursday

PORT TOWNSEND — Trinity United Methodist’s Candlelight Concerts will host Lino Rivera, a classical pianist, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Rivera will play one set with no intermission. Doors at the church, at 609 Taylor St., will open at 6:30 p.m. The performance also will be streamed live at https://trinityumcpt.org/concerts and simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9. Masks are encouraged for in-person attendees.

Admission to the concert is free, with a suggested donation $15 per person. All are welcome whether they donate or not.

Half of the proceeds from this concert will go to Rivera’s chosen charity, The Food Bank Growers.

The Food Bank Growers is an organization with a large group of local people growing vegetables and fruits in Port Townsend and the surrounding communities for the local Food Banks.

Born in the Philippines, Rivera has performed as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and accompanist on three continents.

He is known for engaging his audiences by bringing the pieces he plays to life through sharing his knowledge and interacting with the audience, breaking the formality of the concert experience, organizers said.

The program will include two pieces by Liszt – St. Dorothea, and Hymn to St. Cecilia; music of Bach (Prelude and Fugue), Beethoven (Sonata Op. 31, No. 3), Schubert (Klavierstuecke), and Filipino composer Bernardino Custodio (Ritual Dance).

Rivera performs for Composers, Inc., an organization based in San Francisco that is dedicated to promoting works by contemporary American composers, where he has performed three World Premieres in the past seasons.

He is professor of Music at Saint Mary’s College of California and holds degrees in piano performance from the University of Santo Tomas, the University of Hawaii, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland.
