City band to play ‘Joyous Sounds’ for Sunday concert

SEQUIM — Members of the Sequim City Band invite the community to hear the “Joyous Sounds” of the season and singalong at the group’s annual holiday concert at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The free concert will be at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

The volunteer band, under the direction of Tyler Benedict and with guest announcer Karla Messerschmidt-Morgan providing program notes, will offer some holiday favorites.

Included is Tschaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” which tells of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince in the Land of Sweets as the Sugar Plum Fairy and various sweets from around the world dance in honor of Clara saving the Prince from the Mouse King and his legions.

Per tradition, the audience will be invited to participate with the band in “Christmas Pops Sing-along.”

“The Christmas carol singalong, a perennial hit with the audience, provides everyone the opportunity to lend their voices to the joyous music of the season,” said Debbi Soderstrom, president of the Sequim City Band board.

The band will send the audience out into the December night air with a compilation of Irving Berlin’s “Happy Holiday” and “White Christmas.”

The band will play its final concert of the 2019-20 indoor series March 1 at the Port Angeles High School auditorium.
