Chris Gilbert to play at Thursday’s Candlelight Concert

PORT TOWNSEND — Chris Gilbert will perform at the Candlelight Concerts series at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The series, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St. in Port Townsend, is also simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9 and streams at www.trinityumcpt.org.

The concert is free, although a donation of $15 per person is requested.

Half of the donations will benefit the Drewry family, owners and operators of the Courtyard Cafe, who lost a family member to a heart attack last month.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m and masks are encouraged for in-person attendees.

Gilbert performs a mix of traditional and contemporary folk songs from across the British Isles. For this concert, he will focus on those from England, Scotland and Ireland.

The program will include songs about love, tragedy, reminiscences, ne’er-do-wells, packet ships, myths and legends.

Audience participation is encouraged and chorus words will be provided for attendees.

Listeners who enjoy the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, the Dubliners and Ewan MacColl will also enjoy Gilbert’s show.

Gilbert is the founder and leader of the Irish band Happenstance, half of the duo Gilbert and McHagar and a member of the shanty band Nelson’s Blood.

With these bands, and as a solo performer, Gilbert has performed at the Wooden Boat Festival, the Port Gamble Maritime Festival, the Port Angeles Maritime Festival, the Northwest Folklife festival and even at previous Candlelight Concerts with Happenstance and Nelson’s Blood.
