Choro, Brazilian jazz, to be presented in Coyle

COYLE — Combo Choro will present the original music of Brazil at Concerts in the Woods at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Come hear the most beautiful music you’ve never heard before,” said series organizer Norm Johnson.

The concert will be at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road. Admission will be by donation.

Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission.

Combo Choro is a Port Townsend band dedicated to playing choro music, which uses improvisation much like traditional jazz, Johnson said.

Acoustic music played with guitar, mandolin, violin, flute and bass with occasional vocals, it is most often understood by Americans by the most famous song of the genre, Tico Tico, he said.

“However, choro music is much more than that, encompassing an enormous range of slow emotional pieces, fast tempos and an occasional waltz. While choro began in the 1800s, like jazz the music has evolved and been modernized,” Johnson said.

The six-piece band will consist of Al Bergstein on mandolin, Dick Lynn on guitar, Kindy Kemp on flute, Brandi Ledford on pandeiro, Baila Dworsky on bass and providing vocals, and a special, unidentified guest.

As often happens in jazz groups, the players change for each show, Johnson said.

“This parallels their style of music, which is often improvised on the spot and played in a different way each time as their moods and instrumentation changes,” he said.

“That’s one of the beauties of jazz in the way that it is slightly different every time it’s played and that keeps it fresh even when you’ve heard the same piece many times before.”
