CHIMACUM — The beauty of HJ Carroll Park will serve as an inspiring outdoor location for bringing the story of “The Hobbit” to life when the play version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s book is performed in the Salmon Shelter at the park this week.
Performances at the park on state Highway 19 in Chimacum are set Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. A suggested donation for admission is $10.
The play, written by Markland Taylor, will be presented by the sixth- and seventh-grade students of Sunfield Waldorf School and is directed by Helen Curry, according to a press release.
In the story, Bilbo the Hobbit, Gandalf the wizard and Thorin the dwarf meet up with a series of characters on their quest that takes them on a journey away from the comforts of Hobbiton, over the Misty Mountains and through Mirkwood.
They have a close encounter with trolls, seek advice from Elrond and delight in the singing of the elves of Rivendell.
Continuing on their journey, they fall into the hands of wild goblins, and Bilbo has a chance encounter with Gollum, where he stumbles upon the Ring of Power.
After escaping from a giant spider and fierce woodland elves, Bilbo and Thorin finally find themselves in Laketown at the foot of Lonely Mountain, the lair of Smaug, the insatiable dragon.
The events that conclude this play set the stage for J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring series.
Much of the story is accurately depicted in Taylor’s rendition, according to the press release. Transitions between the scenes use songs and music, including several that were composed by Tolkien.
Attendees are asked to bring blankets and cushions to sit on or low chairs; normal-sized chairs will be placed toward the back. Seating is under cover on gravel.
