Chimacum Creek Picnic to offer glimpse of salmon, other aspects of nature

PORT TOWNSEND — Members of the public are invited to Jefferson County Land Trust’s Chimacum Creek Picnic on Saturday.

The free, public, family-friendly event will begin at 11 a.m. at Illahee Preserve at the end of Creek View Lane.

Parking and shuttles will be available at Lexar Homes, 92 Kala Square Place.

“The timing should be right to watch salmon returning home to spawn,” the land trust said.

“Bring your picnic lunch and blanket and come out to sit back and relax or enjoy a variety of fun activities.”

Here is the schedule:

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Visitors can view salmon with state Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists, learn about wild edibles with Caitlin Battersby and make children’s crafts with Oma Landstrom.

11:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. — Ken Wilson will share nature discovery activities.

Noon to 12:20 p.m. — In “Native Plants for Beginners,” visitors can learn to recognize a dozen common native plants and learn a few facts about them in this walk led by Wendy Feltham and Marcia Schwendiman.

12:30 p.m. — “Celebrating Salmon,” a presentation by local artist and salmon activist Tom Jay, who was the crew leader for the first salmon restoration project in the area, author of the essay “Salmon of the Heart” and a sculptor.

1:10 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. — In “Bird Communication,” Dave Rugh will lead a walk as he tells what birds are calling and what they are trying to say.

1:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. — Wilson will again share nature discovery activities.
