Chili cook-off, picnic on menu at Jefferson Fairgrounds

PORT TOWNSEND — It’s chili cookin’ time, y’all.

Organizers of the 39th annual Port Townsend Chili Cook-off — a free event — invite cooks to see who makes the best chili at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.

Fairground gates will open at 12:30 p.m. with a horseshoe competition starting at 1 p.m. and chili judging at 3 p.m.

This is a community picnic and attendees are invited to bring lunch, beverages and table settings.

Health Department regulations prevent the organizers from offering chili to the general public.

The chili categories include mild, hot, family-style and verde.

All competition chilies and corn breads must be registered before the judging begins.

The team of judges consists of the 2014 cook-off winners, who will choose the best chili in each of the categories and will then select one of these as the Best Overall Chili.

The creator of the championship chili will have his or her name engraved on the cook-off trophy, created by Bob McGarrough.

There will once again be music. Picnic tables will be provided and a fire pit with grill will be set up to keep chilis and corn breads warm.

Glass containers and dogs are discouraged.

For more information, call Ron McElroy at 360-385-2556, Larry Dennison at 360-301-0120 or Pete Raab at 360-774-1219.
