Children’s Choir Festival performance set Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — Young chorus singers will perform in a Memorial Day weekend concert at Fort Worden State Park.

The 16th Fort Worden Children’s Choir Festival will feature youths from groups from across the West Coast performing at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, available online at www.fortwordenfestival.com or at the door at the McCurdy Pavilion, 200 Battery Way.

This year’s festival will feature nationally acclaimed children’s choir director Elena Sharkova (born in St. Petersburg, Russia — now residing in San Jose, Calif.) and the 2017 festival choir.

This year’s 2017 Fort Worden Festival participating choirs are:

• Spectrum Choral Academy — Youth Chorus & Children’s Chorus, Gig Harbor.

• Heart of the Valley Children’s Choir, Corvallis, Ore.

• Port Townsend Youth Chorus, Port Townsend.

• Rainier Youth Chorus — Bella Voce Choir, Kent.

• Seattle Children’s Chorus — Intermezzo & Arioso Choirs, Seattle.

• East Valley Children’s Chorus, Walnut, Calif.

• Bellevue Girlchoir & Bellevue Boychoir, Bellevue.

Each choir works throughout the year on selected festival music and prepares songs it will present individually during the concert.

Today and Saturday will be filled will joint rehearsals, shared meals and social activities, including a fun dress-up themed dance.

Rehearsals prepare the singers for the festival concert, which takes place Saturday.

Individual, combined songs

The concert will feature each choir performing individually before taking the stage together under the baton of Sharkova for the final six combined songs.

Julie Cole Mandery, festival accompanist from Port Orchard, will accompany the combined choirs.
