Chance to learn about whales offered Monday

PORT ANGELES — A free presentation about the return of humpback and gray whales — and a chance to walk through an inflatable whale — will be offered Monday at Peninsula College.

John Calambokidis, a senior research biologist at Cascadia Research Collective, will present “Giants of the Salish Sea,” in Keegan Hall, Room 125 of Building M on the college’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Seating will begin at 6 p.m. The presentation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Calambokidis will focus on the latest research on the return of humpback and gray whales to the North Olympic Peninsula.

A full-scale inflatable whale will be available from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the college’s gymnasium. Visitors can walk through the life-sized inflatable humpback.

The whale, presented by the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, is modeled after a whale known as Big Mama that frequents regional waters.

The free presentation is sponsored by Peninsula College in close collaboration with the national marine sanctuary, Feiro Marine Life Center and The Whale Trail.
